WOMEN’S GOLF IS SOARING!
Image: GETTY IMAGES/LPGA
Another great LPGA event ended on 12 May, and while Rory McIlroy took care of a fairly diluted field at Quail Hollow, Rose Zhang (above) took her second win on the LPGA Tour. The unfortunate Madelene Sagström surrendered a convincing lead to the rookie, whose birdie, birdie finish ensured victory.
Back home we saw the Investec SA Women’s Open take place at Erinvale where two things struck me – the depth, strength and global reach of the field and how amazing Erinvale looked and performed. Nicole Garcia was the highest-placed South African and came home in a fighting fourth, with Belgium’s Manon De Roey convincingly taking home the title, four shots clear of England’s Gabriella Cowley.
The golf was sparkling and once again the TV coverage was of the highest quality. It is exactly the type of support the women’s game needs to continue growing at the rapid pace it deserves. Huge kudos need to go to Erinvale, their staff and members for preparing what looked like a spectacular course. The emerald green, superbly manicured course with the backdrop of the Helderberg was a magnificent advert for golf in South Africa. Very well done to all involved!
Nelly Korda is hot property right now! Five wins in a row on the LPGA Tour is unbelievable. The comparisons being made between her and Scottie Scheffler are not only healthy for the sport in general but also a remarkable state of global women’s golf. The fact the men’s top players are not only actively supportive of women’s golf but can also admire and learn from the ease, grace and ability of the women’s players makes quite a statement!
Korda has undoubtedly got one of the best golf swings on the planet! Globally, women’s golf is in a really good space and to quote the Washington Post: “According to the National Golf Foundation, from 2020 to 2022, more than 800 000 American women took up the sport to bring the total to 6.4-million female golfers. While the number of female golfers rose about 15%, the male golf pool increased by just 2% in the same time frame.” Read more: washingtonpost.com
While these numbers aren’t the most recent, it is worth noting that TV coverage is up significantly, across all women’s Tours, and viewership and attendance are showing positive growth around the world. TGM is firmly behind our women and will continue to support and promote women’s golf as a key pillar of our editorial mix.
