In partnership with The R&A, GolfRSA has launched an exciting new competition where golfers could win their way to represent South Africa in The R&A 9-Hole Challenge Final on the same course as the 2023 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

In partnership with The R&A, GolfRSA has launched an exciting new competition where golfers could win their way to represent South Africa in The R&A 9-Hole Challenge Final on the same course as the 2023 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.
To enter this year’s lucky draw for the GolfRSA Race to The R&A 9 Hole Challenge, golfers will have to play and register three 9-hole rounds of golf on the Handicaps Network Africa (HNA) system in the month of April, with the winning pair being randomly drawn in early May.
The winning duo will join golfers from Great Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand in The R&A 9-Hole Challenge Final, played on the Friday prior to the Open.
They will also receive tickets to watch two practice days and two championship days of The Open and this wonderful prize includes airfare, hotel accommodation subsidy, green fees and a subsistence allowance.
“It’s an amazing prize that the R&A has offered and GolfRSA has added to,” said GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn. “Not many South Africans have the chance to either play on an Open rota course or watch the Open Championship in person, and we are giving two lucky golfers the chance to do both.”
Players will be eligible for the lucky draw if they meet the following criteria:
- GolfRSA affiliated member with a handicap with HNA
- South African citizen / passport holder
- Adult of over 18 years of age
- Played 3 rounds of 9 holes of golf in the month of April at any club in South Africa, with scores captured on the HNA system
For the 2024 GolfRSA Race to The R&A 9 Hole Challenge golfers will have the chance to play their way into The R&A 9-Hole Challenge Final through a series of qualifying events.
“Each club in South Africa will run their own internal competition or series to pick their top club pair to represent the club in the GolfRSA Race to The R&A 9 Hole Challenge,” said Hepburn. “Club pairs will play in a GolfRSA regional tournament, with the regional winners going to a National Final in the month of April 2024. The final winners will represent South Africa at The R&A 9 Hole Challenge Final in 2024 at Royal Troon in Scotland.
“I encourage all our handicapped golfers to take up this wonderful a wonderful opportunity – contact your club for more information or download the full tournament info and conditions below and make sure you are in the draw for this incredible prize by playing and registering your three 9-hole rounds as soon as possible.”

A bumper week awaits South Africa’s top blind golfers with the SA Blind Open and IBGA World Championship set to take place at Milnerton Golf Club this week.
The world’s best will descend upon the notoriously tricky links course for what promises to be an exciting week.
The 2023 South African Blind Open Championship kicks off the action with a 36-hole Medal tournament from 27 March and after a rest day, top ranked golfers from 14 different countries will contest the International Blind Golf Association World Championship from 30-31 Match.
A total of 48 players will tee it up in this prestigious event, which will also be a 36-hole medal competition.
SA Blind Open and IBGA World Championship Tournament Director Jurie Mare highlighted the historic nature of the 2023 IBGA World Championship and underlined the test that Milnerton Golf Club will provide.
“For everyone at GolfRSA, the South African Disabled Association (SADGA) and the SA Blind Golf Association (SABGA), it is a great honour and privilege to stage the IBGA World Championship at Milnerton Golf Club as South Africa becomes the first African nation to host this prestigious tournament,” Mare remarked.
“We are absolutely delighted to welcome such a cosmopolitan field to our shores and I have no doubt that Milnerton Golf Club will be a stern test for the assembled competitors, particularly if the wind gets up.
“It is a feather in the cap for SADGA and SABGA to host this event, and what promises to be a festival of golf in Cape Town, and we are really excited to get underway.”
Entry to the event is free, there is ample parking and the clubhouse facilities are open for spectators.

SA golf celebrates Denis Hutchinson
GolfRSA National Squad & South African Golf Development Board members joined professionals from the Sunshine Tour & PGA of South Africa to celebrate the incredible contribution of SA golfing great Denis Hutchinson has made to the game this January.
The annual Denis Hutchinson Challenge was hosted once again by Hutchie’s home club, Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club, and the team competition was contested on the West Course.
Hutchinson had multiple victories on the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour in his playing career, including famously being the last amateur to have won the Investec South African Open Championship in 1959. Amongst his many accolades, Hutchinson has been recognised with Lifetime Membership of the Sunshine Tour and as Honorary Life President of the PGA of South Africa.
In addition to entertaining golf fans for years with his colourful commentary on the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour, Hutchinson has been recognised with Lifetime Membership of the Sunshine Tour and as Honorary Life President of the PGA of South Africa – amongst his many accolades.
“Hutchy has been such a wonderful ambassador for South African golf for decades now, both as a player who competed with some of the greats of the game, and then as a commentator who became known as ‘The Voice of Golf’. It’s an honour for all of us in the family of South African golf to come together on a day such as this and take the time to recognise the immense contribution he has made to the game we all love,” said Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour and Sunshine Ladies Tour.
National Squad players Yurav Premlall, Jaden Deltel, Zinan Maimane and Janko van der Merwe represented GolfRSA while Kael Strydom, Eric Ncube, Jayden Hoskins, Tawriq Abrahams, Rezario Adams teed it for the SAGDB.
Central Gauteng’s Kael Strydom finished in the winning team of Sunshine Ladies Tour player Ivanna Samu, Sunshine Tour member Nikhil Rama, and PGA of South Africa professional Gregory Jacobs, who took top honours with 89 points on the West Course.
GolfRSA CEO and SAGDB Managing Director Grant Hepburn added: “We are honoured to have our young rising stars partake in this celebration of one of our golfing greats. Not only could they learn from the professionals, but Hutchie has a world of experience which he is eager to impart, and this opportunity for our youngsters to spend time with him was priceless.”

Bachem breaks through in Jonsson Workwear Open
Germany’s Nick Bachem claimed a dream debut victory on the DP World Tour when he won the Jonsson Workwear Open, co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour, by four shots at The Club at Steyn City on Sunday.
Bachem closed with a bogey-free final round of 64 to win on 24 under par. South Africans Zander Lombard and Hennie du Plessis shared second place on 20 under par with their respective final rounds of 65 and 68.
Bachem’s rise has been incredible from only recently playing on the Euro Pro Tour and then European Challenge Tour, to now being crowned a champion on the DP World Tour.
“It feels amazing. I think it’s my 10th start on the DP World Tour. I always believed I could win out here. But to be honest, just playing on the DP World Tour has been overwhelming, and now to win on it as well is amazing. I actually can’t process what’s happened to me over the last few years.”
Bachem overcame a challenging start to his final round when his drive off the first was plugged in a fairway bunker. He managed to make an incredible par from there and went on to play flawless golf.
“I had a bad start with that plugged lie on the first hole and a pitch out. But I changed my mindset during this tournament. I led a tournament in Kenya recently and I tried too hard to win there and it didn’t work out. So this week I just stuck to the plan and stayed calm. My caddie is also very experienced and kept me in the moment most of the time. I just wanted to enjoy today and enjoy having the chance to win a tournament. I played great and am lucky it was my day.”
Bachem says he’s also determined to enjoy every moment of what he believes is a privilege to play professional golf.
“I can’t think of anything else I’d want to do with my life, and how lucky I am. I mean, to be here in South Africa in the sunshine playing a beautiful golf course while it’s snowing back home, and all I have to worry about is whether I make a few birdies or not – that’s a pretty good life. I’m determined to enjoy every moment of being on tour and to really savour it. I learn from the bad weeks and enjoy the good ones.” – Michael Vlismas
