Other athletes who shone on the day by winning their events were Collin-Paul Kemp in the Discus, Tom Barnard in the Shot Put and Henry Potgieter in the U19 Javelin. In the U16 group we had wins by Matthew van der Merwe in the Shot Put and Cem Anibal in the 100m Hurdles.

Our U14 group also had an outstanding day, with Zach Hillman winning both the 400m and 800m, Willon-Jay MacPherson the 100m, and Schalk Fourie the Shot Put. The U15 relay team, consisting of Andrew Gilbert, Zoe Lutete, Willon-Jay MacPherson and Janu Pretorius, also were victorious. From there some of the Bosch athletes went on to compete at the Western Province Junior Championships.
We also had some great performances at this prestigious event, with Zach Hillman winning the U14 800m and Eathon Williams winning the U15 300m Hurdles. Caiden Mitchell finished second in the U15 100m. Zach Hillman, Eathon Williams and Caiden Mitchell were selected for the WP High Team to represent the province at the Western Cape Championships. Eathon Williams won a bronze medal at the Championships.
Only two of the four Spring Athletics Meetings took place during the fourth term. Rondebosch and SACS unfortunately had to cancel their meetings.

Rondebosch Basketball experienced a slow start the season. During Term 1 our boys had to learn the value of commitment. There were very few games and we struggled to get big numbers at training sessions.
During the fourth term, Mr Ndlovu played a huge role in re-igniting basketball at Rondebosch, getting the boys to practise in numbers and making sure everyone knew what was happening and what needed to be done. We had goals, purposes and visions of how we wanted our Term 4 season to be. For the first time in 2023, we had a clear identity of Rondebosch basketball and a committed first 12 led by many Grade 11 boys. With the departure of coach Eric Norman, I also stepped up as the first team coach for the first time in my Rondebosch coaching career.
We started pre-season with two losses, against Wynberg and SACS, but ended pre-season with a comfortable victory against Bishops. We lost our first league game 34-31 against Heideveld, a very tight game against a school that plays basketball all year round. This result showed a lot of improvement as RBHS only plays basketball in Terms 1 and 4. This game prepared us well for the Wynberg Festival Tournament, a tournament where we won most of our matches but lost in the finals to SACS. There were many highlights of that festival, such as the 34-31 group stage victory against a very good SACS team who we met again in the tournament final and to whom we lost - a hard-fought victory after the match went to overtime. The boys showed great spirit and passion.
What followed was a great run of basketball games. We had wins against Westerford and Groote Schuur High, and ended the season with a convincing 37-12 victory against The Settlers High School.
Term 4 proved to be a great term of basketball where we shared a lot of beautiful moments with the boys. We played as a unit and a team. Every boy stepped up and took his game to the next level and we had a very good team chemistry. Boys showed commitment and we look forward to doing the same thing again in Term 1 of 2024.

Through hard work, dedication and discipline success is inevitable. The U16A team had a successful season this year and that was made possible because of each player who represented the team. However, it is important to note that this season began with many closely contested losses. In Term 1, most of the players were newly promoted to the team, therefore adapting to the intensity of the division as well as gettng to know one another was an uncomfortable challenge.
They competed at the Cape Town Metro Top Schools Tournament, which was a battle of the best in the Cape District. Although the team lost their matches, there were some phenomenal moments to hold onto. Through all adversity, the team showed great character and eagerness to continue improving. The pressure was high and the team understood that they were obligated to establish and maintain high standards in matches.
In Term 4, the team revealed their potential, one training session at a time. The losses that they experienced were the reason for the change in atitude. They adopted a stronger mentality. They showcased growth and development in skills at the 2023 WBHS Basketball Festival, winning all their matches to lift the trophy in the final. J Barkhuizen won ‘Most Valuable Player’ of the tournament. In addition, the team obtained a dominant victory of 49-18 against a competitive opposition in the last league match of a promising season.

The U14A basketball team embarked on a challenging journey this season, navigating through a series of tough losses that tested their spirit and commitment to the sport. Despite facing formidable opponents, the team remained resilient and determined, showcasing their passion for the game. Each match became a learning experience - an opportunity for growth and improvement.
Throughout the season, the U14A players demonstrated an unwavering companionship that extended beyond the court. They became more than a team, supporting each other both in victories and defeats. The highlight of the season came at their final match of the season in the form of a spectacular win.
The team had worked the entire season to reach this point and as the final buzzer sounded, it was more than a win – it was a testament to the team’s enduring spirit, their ability to overcome challenges and a tangible reminder of the power of brotherhood that Rondebosch seeks to instill, ending the season with a very convincing 38-17 victory against Settlers, and Kaka scoring a beautiful last-second bucket from the centre circle.
The U14A basketball team’s journey is a story of commitment, growth and solidarity and shows a promising future for the sport of basketball and the boys of Rondebosch.

2023 proved to be another amazing chapter in the annals of Bosch cricket, with the 1st XI being ranked the top side in the country for the 3rd consecutive year.
The Peninsula Festival saw the boys finish unbeaten, with wins against Pretoria Boys’, Hilton, Waterkloof, St Charles and St Davids. Highlights included a hundred on debut from Noah Heath, a century from Declan Gillespie, as well as consistent performances from captain, Jordan Neill, as well as Giyan Sulcas with both bat and ball.
The annual day/night T20 against Bishops was once again well-attended by the school and this support helped the boys to a comfortable 6 wicket win with Jordan recording another half-century and Chad Brehem claiming 3 for 10. Alex Combrinck’s 4 for 5 allowed us to defend a small total against Paarl Boys and Giyan Sulcas’ fine all-round performance against St Stithians (72* and 4/29), complemented by a feisty 68 from Bongile Mfunelwa, meant that Bosch won by 46 runs against the highly-fancied Joburg team.
A tight affair at Wynberg saw us fall 2 runs short in the run chase (Sulcas 102). The following weekend was again a mixed affair with a good win against Grey PE, followed by a loss to Affies. Another narrow loss to Paul Roos was followed by two wins in the last matches of the term against the Old Boys (Mfunelwa 85*, Gillespie 62*) and Bishops by 6 wickets (Raeeq Daniels 5/30).
Cape Schools’ Week saw us win 4 out of 4 matches with a number of all-round performances from the team, Graeme Engelbrecht’s 4 wickets for 0 runs against St Andrew’s being the highlight. A win against Paarl Gym (Mfunelwa 76*) was good preparation for the North/South T20 tournament.
With the team seemingly still having one foot on the plane from the early morning flight, we lost our first match to St Stithians by 9 runs.
With the pressure on to qualify for the top 8, the boys put in two stellar performances on day 2, beating Westville and Affies. Jordan Neill was outstanding with scores of 130* and 119*, showing why he has been selected for the Ireland U19 World Cup team. He was well-supported by Mfunelwa (66* and 42) in both innings. The quarter-finals saw us dominate SACS (Heath 82*, Gillespie 77 and 3/19 and Engelbrecht 3/26). Unfortunately, we fell 7 runs short in the semi-final, despite a valiant 86 from Neill. We secured 3rd place with a big win over Grey Bloem, Heath 89* and David Simon 3/13 securing the 66-run win.
The final 3 games of the year saw our bowlers stand out, securing a 155-run against Wynberg and 7 wicket wins against SACS and Bishops to record the “Triple Crown”. Daniels (5/34 and 3/11), Gillespie (63 and 3/25), Engelbrecht (3/18) and Dan Cooke (61*) were the star performers.
We thank our matrics, Jordan Neill, Bongile Mfunelwa, Chad Brehem, Alex Combrick, Graeme Englebrecht, Nic Sendin and Giyan Sulcas for the contributions they have made to Bosch cricket - they will be missed next year. Another heartfelt thank you to Mrs Neill and her wonderful team of moms and dads for the amazing catering throughout the year and the fantastic organisation of the annual cricket dinner. We are so grateful for your contributions.
