Term 1 started with the Inter-House Athletics competition. Canigou performed exceptionally well in the competition, with their athletes breaking three records. Schalk Fourie set a new record in the U15 Javelin with a throw of 40,80m and Caiden Mitchell achieved a remarkable time of 11.2 sec in the U15 100m race. Additionally, the U17 Relay team, comprised of A Dada, H Lima, C Louw, and S Mafuya, won the race with a time of 47.10 sec. Canigou once again demonstrated their strength in various athletic disciplines by finishing as the top house.

We took a small team through to participate in the annual Paarl Boys’ Invitation Meeting. RBHS won three events. Our junior boys shone on the day, with Eathon Williams winning the U15 100m and 200m and Zach Hillman winning the U14 800m. The annual Quadrangular took place at Wynberg Boys’ High School. We saw some top performances throughout the age groups. The best performance by a Bosch athlete was by Zach Hillman, who broke the U14 400m record with a blistering 55.40 seconds, as well as the U14 800m record with a time of 2 minutes 10 seconds. Other athletes who shone on the day by winning their events were Collin-Paul Kemp in the Discus, Tom Barnard in the Shot Put and Henry Potgieter in the U19 Javelin. In the U16 group we had wins by Matthew van der Merwe in the Shot Put and Cem Anibal in the 100m Hurdles.

Our U15 group also shone by winning numerous events. Winners on the day were Eathon Williams in the 200m and 400m, Caiden Mitchell in the 100m, Alex Benecke in the 800m, Angus Moss in the High Jump, and Schalk Fourie in the Javelin. The U15 relay team, consisting of Daniel Arendse, Ephraim Mangunga-Mulenda, Farhan Patel, and Eathon Williams, also came out victorious.

Our U14 group also had an outstanding day, with Zach Hillman winning both the 400m and 800m, Willon-Jay MacPherson the 100m, and Schalk Fourie the Shot Put. The U15 relay team, consisting of Andrew Gilbert, Zoe Lutete, Willon-Jay MacPherson and Janu Pretorius, also were victorious. From there some of the Bosch athletes went on to compete at the Western Province Junior Championships.

We also had some great performances at this prestigious event, with Zach Hillman winning the U14 800m and Eathon Williams winning the U15 300m Hurdles. Caiden Mitchell finished second in the U15 100m. Zach Hillman, Eathon Williams and Caiden Mitchell were selected for the WP High Team to represent the province at the Western Cape Championships. Eathon Williams won a bronze medal at the Championships.

Only two of the four Spring Athletics Meetings took place during the fourth term. Rondebosch and SACS unfortunately had to cancel their meetings.

Rondebosch Basketball experienced a slow start the season. During Term 1 our boys had to learn the value of commitment. There were very few games and we struggled to get big numbers at training sessions.

During the fourth term, Mr Ndlovu played a huge role in re-igniting basketball at Rondebosch, getting the boys to practise in numbers and making sure everyone knew what was happening and what needed to be done. We had goals, purposes and visions of how we wanted our Term 4 season to be. For the first time in 2023, we had a clear identity of Rondebosch basketball and a committed first 12 led by many Grade 11 boys. With the departure of coach Eric Norman, I also stepped up as the first team coach for the first time in my Rondebosch coaching career.

We started pre-season with two losses, against Wynberg and SACS, but ended pre-season with a comfortable victory against Bishops. We lost our first league game 34-31 against Heideveld, a very tight game against a school that plays basketball all year round. This result showed a lot of improvement as RBHS only plays basketball in Terms 1 and 4. This game prepared us well for the Wynberg Festival Tournament, a tournament where we won most of our matches but lost in the finals to SACS. There were many highlights of that festival, such as the 34-31 group stage victory against a very good SACS team who we met again in the tournament final and to whom we lost - a hard-fought victory after the match went to overtime. The boys showed great spirit and passion.

What followed was a great run of basketball games. We had wins against Westerford and Groote Schuur High, and ended the season with a convincing 37-12 victory against The Settlers High School.

Term 4 proved to be a great term of basketball where we shared a lot of beautiful moments with the boys. We played as a unit and a team. Every boy stepped up and took his game to the next level and we had a very good team chemistry. Boys showed commitment and we look forward to doing the same thing again in Term 1 of 2024.

u16A team:

Through hard work, dedication and discipline success is inevitable. The U16A team had a successful season this year and that was made possible because of each player who represented the team. However, it is important to note that this season began with many closely contested losses. In Term 1, most of the players were newly promoted to the team, therefore adapting to the intensity of the division as well as gettng to know one another was an uncomfortable challenge.

They competed at the Cape Town Metro Top Schools Tournament, which was a battle of the best in the Cape District. Although the team lost their matches, there were some phenomenal moments to hold onto. Through all adversity, the team showed great character and eagerness to continue improving. The pressure was high and the team understood that they were obligated to establish and maintain high standards in matches.

In Term 4, the team revealed their potential, one training session at a time. The losses that they experienced were the reason for the change in atitude. They adopted a stronger mentality. They showcased growth and development in skills at the 2023 WBHS Basketball Festival, winning all their matches to lift the trophy in the final. J Barkhuizen won ‘Most Valuable Player’ of the tournament. In addition, the team obtained a dominant victory of 49-18 against a competitive opposition in the last league match of a promising season.

The U14A basketball team embarked on a challenging journey this season, navigating through a series of tough losses that tested their spirit and commitment to the sport. Despite facing formidable opponents, the team remained resilient and determined, showcasing their passion for the game. Each match became a learning experience - an opportunity for growth and improvement.

Throughout the season, the U14A players demonstrated an unwavering companionship that extended beyond the court. They became more than a team, supporting each other both in victories and defeats. The highlight of the season came at their final match of the season in the form of a spectacular win.

The team had worked the entire season to reach this point and as the final buzzer sounded, it was more than a win – it was a testament to the team’s enduring spirit, their ability to overcome challenges and a tangible reminder of the power of brotherhood that Rondebosch seeks to instill, ending the season with a very convincing 38-17 victory against Settlers, and Kaka scoring a beautiful last-second bucket from the centre circle.

The U14A basketball team’s journey is a story of commitment, growth and solidarity and shows a promising future for the sport of basketball and the boys of Rondebosch.

2023 proved to be another amazing chapter in the annals of Bosch cricket, with the 1st XI being ranked the top side in the country for the 3rd consecutive year.

The Peninsula Festival saw the boys finish unbeaten, with wins against Pretoria Boys’, Hilton, Waterkloof, St Charles and St Davids. Highlights included a hundred on debut from Noah Heath, a century from Declan Gillespie, as well as consistent performances from captain, Jordan Neill, as well as Giyan Sulcas with both bat and ball.

The annual day/night T20 against Bishops was once again well-attended by the school and this support helped the boys to a comfortable 6 wicket win with Jordan recording another half-century and Chad Brehem claiming 3 for 10. Alex Combrinck’s 4 for 5 allowed us to defend a small total against Paarl Boys and Giyan Sulcas’ fine all-round performance against St Stithians (72* and 4/29), complemented by a feisty 68 from Bongile Mfunelwa, meant that Bosch won by 46 runs against the highly-fancied Joburg team.

A tight affair at Wynberg saw us fall 2 runs short in the run chase (Sulcas 102). The following weekend was again a mixed affair with a good win against Grey PE, followed by a loss to Affies. Another narrow loss to Paul Roos was followed by two wins in the last matches of the term against the Old Boys (Mfunelwa 85*, Gillespie 62*) and Bishops by 6 wickets (Raeeq Daniels 5/30).

Cape Schools’ Week saw us win 4 out of 4 matches with a number of all-round performances from the team, Graeme Engelbrecht’s 4 wickets for 0 runs against St Andrew’s being the highlight. A win against Paarl Gym (Mfunelwa 76*) was good preparation for the North/South T20 tournament.

With the team seemingly still having one foot on the plane from the early morning flight, we lost our first match to St Stithians by 9 runs.

With the pressure on to qualify for the top 8, the boys put in two stellar performances on day 2, beating Westville and Affies. Jordan Neill was outstanding with scores of 130* and 119*, showing why he has been selected for the Ireland U19 World Cup team. He was well-supported by Mfunelwa (66* and 42) in both innings. The quarter-finals saw us dominate SACS (Heath 82*, Gillespie 77 and 3/19 and Engelbrecht 3/26). Unfortunately, we fell 7 runs short in the semi-final, despite a valiant 86 from Neill. We secured 3rd place with a big win over Grey Bloem, Heath 89* and David Simon 3/13 securing the 66-run win.

The final 3 games of the year saw our bowlers stand out, securing a 155-run against Wynberg and 7 wicket wins against SACS and Bishops to record the “Triple Crown”. Daniels (5/34 and 3/11), Gillespie (63 and 3/25), Engelbrecht (3/18) and Dan Cooke (61*) were the star performers.

We thank our matrics, Jordan Neill, Bongile Mfunelwa, Chad Brehem, Alex Combrick, Graeme Englebrecht, Nic Sendin and Giyan Sulcas for the contributions they have made to Bosch cricket - they will be missed next year. Another heartfelt thank you to Mrs Neill and her wonderful team of moms and dads for the amazing catering throughout the year and the fantastic organisation of the annual cricket dinner. We are so grateful for your contributions.

The 2023 season started with good wins during the Peninsula Festival against Pretoria Boys’ High (T Webber 3/5 and J Engelbrecht 3/7), Hilton College (T Heyns 51, N Musikanth 49 and T Short 3/11) and St Charles (S Jones 3/14). The T20 match against St David’s was tied (A Saiet 2/5). A victory against Curro Durbanville (Saiet 5/17 and Musikanth 42 no) was followed by a good win against Newlands Cricket School (Musikanth 125).

St. Stithians was outplayed (Short 60 and B Hartman 41). We then beat Bellville (T Webber 3/9 and Musikanth 3/7) before we took four defeats in a row. M Powel (4/44) and Heyns (86) brought some respectability against Affies. The team bounced back with a 9 wicket win against Paul Roos (Short 4/35 and Musikanth 46 no) and an 8 wicket win against Stellenberg (Musikanth 70 no).

At the Grey High Festival we beat Kearsney by 6 wickets (Heyns 81 no, Short 3/14, J Wyngaard 2/8) and Selborne by 88 runs (F Patel 2/4 and M Powell 2/8). We lost to Jeppe by two runs, despite D Keswell scoring 73. Parel Vallei was beaten before a good 4 wicket win against Paarl Gymnasium (Musikanth 50 n/o, Joubert 4/43 and Saiet 3/41). Matthew Powell (4/0 in one over) was the star against Boland Landbou, despite 55 by Short.

Solid victories against Whitgift (UK) (Heyns 75, Patel 40 and Saiet 5/36) and SACS (after a first term defeat) by 8 wickets (Musikanth 62 no), set the team up for the last match against Bishops. The defeat was made somewhat more bearable because of Nic Joubert’s best figures ever – 6/23 in 9 overs.

Thank you to Wesley for his diligence, commitment, knowledge and friendship with the boys whilst walking the extra mile. Lastly, thank you to Heidi and the group of parents for your support and for still serving the best teas and eats in the country.

u15b team:

As the summer season dawned on us, the U15B team was excited to play some cricket and face new challenges ahead. The U15B cricket was a side full of happiness, friendship and great vibes. They worked hard at every practice session and were always keen to learn new things.

The year was a bit of a rollercoaster ride, with the team not starting the season well. We lost games against Wynberg, Parel Vallei, Paul Roos and Bishops, and won two games against SACS and Compton & Chandlers.

The team developed and grew impressively from Term 1 to Term 4. They started to believe in themselves and the team. One thing that was amazing to see was the friendships that started to form in the team, this resulted in us becoming a great team and winning 4/5 games in Term 4. We won games against Paarl Gymnasium by 157 runs, Fairmont High by 9 wickets, against SACS by 5 wickets, and won the last game against Bishops by 73 runs.

Notable performances this year were: L Allie 3/11 against Wynberg, K Dalvi 4/25 against Parel Vallei, O Main 3/10 against SACS, O Hammond 44 runs against Paarl Gym, M Gadien 5/18 against Paarl Gym, S Omelo 3/10 against Paarl Gym and 6/20 against Bishops, E van Niekerk 3/17 against Wynberg, Tom Dicey 131 runs against Wynberg and 5/10 against Fairmont High.

Oli Main, as team captain, showed great leadership. He led the boys from the front and took charge on many occasions. Thank you to the team for being fun to work with and for showing great manners and respect both on and off the field. Lastly, thank you to the parents for the support they gave the team, always making sure that we had drinks and lunch every Saturday.

The U15C cricket team had a challenging yet commendable season, displaying resilience and determinaon that truly defined their spirit. Despite facing tough competition in the 12 matches played, the team emerged victorious in 5, showcasing their unwavering commitment to the game. Leading from the front, Captain Vaughan Gay's exemplary leadership skills not only inspired his teammates, but also instilled a sense of unity and camaraderie within the team.

Notably, Nicholas van der Heever's remarkable progress throughout the season did not go unnoticed, as his dedication and hard work shone brightly, making him the most improved player. His journey symbolises the team's collective efforts and their willingness constantly to strive for betterment.

It is always an interesting cricket year at U14 level as different primary schools and different styles have to be consolidated into the Bosch brand of cricket. It is definitely a step up from U13 level. Rondebosch once again proved that they can compete with the top sides in the country.

The 2023 group worked hard to find their niche in the cricketing world. The side’s strength was in the bowling, with the “spin twins” of Jonny Neill and Arin Spiller proving to be an exciting future combination by taking the bulk of the wickets. The depth and variety of the bowling was borne out by the fact that, at times, Nur Limbada and Liam Beukes could be added to the spin mix, depending on the conditions. Schalk Fourie, as an opening bowler, produced some exceptional spells, including a hat-trick - all bowled against Bishops. He was ably supported by Naveed Parker, Daniel Roos, Zion van Rensburg and, in the latter part of the season, by Eli Aufrichtig. Mathew Brooks could also be relied upon to create pressure with his accurate medium seamers.

The excellent bowling was not always backed up by consistent battng, but by the end of the season the side was finding its rhythm and Schalk Fourie, Thomas Hoffmann and Josh Kirby scored half centuries, backed up by Mathew Brooks’ battng.

The season highlights were beating all the traditional rival schools at least once, and then being undefeated against all the Boland schools and an emphatic win against Grey College.

The tour to Durban and Hilton was another highlight, with a convincing win against Clifton and then a nailbiting fight back to tie with Michael House.

The side has a lot of potential and thanks must go to Schalk Fourie for leading by example as captain of the side, as well as to Thomas Hoffmann for his competitive nature and his support as vice-captain. Thanks to Mr and Mrs Fourie for co-ordinating all the fantastic catering and to the parents for their support.

u14b team:

This year the U14B cricket team had a great season, with many very closely fought matches. The team developed and grew exponentially from Term 1 to Term 4 and, most importantly, the boys had fun and made great friendships throughout the season. It was fantastic to see how the team always encouraged one another, in the good times and the bad. I was also very impressed with how the team conducted themselves on and off the field, showing great respect to opposition, visitors and umpires.

Captain, Jack Bradshaw, led from the front with both bat and ball. He contributed massively to the team and showed fantastic leadership ability. Renzo de Waal was an invaluable asset as an all-rounder. He ended the season as top run-scorer, while also taking many wickets and restricting the run-rate while bowling. He was awarded the Player of the Season award. Liam Lewis proved to be vital within the battng department, scoring runs regularly at the top of the order. Faraaz Jaffar was the highest wicket-taker of the season, while Joseph Beggs played an integral role with bat in hand. Faraaz and Joseph shared the Most Improved Player of the Year award. The overall highlight of the season was securing the Grand Slam against Bishops in a day/night match in the final game of the season.

This group was truly a pleasure to coach. Not only were they a team filled with talented cricketers; more importantly, they are phenomenal young men. There is no doubt that these boys have massive potential and I know that they have bright cricketing futures ahead of them. I wish the boys all the very best in the years to come at Bosch.

The U14 C cricket season at Rondebosch Boys’ High School was filled with thrilling performances and remarkable victories. The team displayed great skill and determination throughout the season.

In a closely contested match against Wynberg, Rondebosch chased down 106 runs in 19 overs, with Dylan Jabbit's 30 leading the charge, resulting in a welldeserved win by 6 wickets. The young Bosch team faced a tough challenge against Paarl Gim, with Louis Loftus contributing a valuable 24 runs. Rondebosch managed to defend their total of 116, thanks to Ethan Scott's fantastic bowling performance, winning by 6 runs.

The match against Bishops showcased the team's battng prowess as they posted a commanding total of 146 runs. Nathan Schalit and Dylan Jabbit played pivotal roles and their bowlers dominated Bishops, sealing a resounding victory by 76 runs. In the game against SACS, Rondebosch faced a target of 127 runs and, led by Owen de Wet's unbeaten 30*, they achieved the target with 2 balls to spare, securing a 4-wicket win. The U14C side faced Bishops once more, and Waldo Englebrecht's brilliant hat-trick and a great battng display by Dylan Jabbit resulted in a 5-wicket victory, chasing down Bishops' 93 runs.

Overall, it was an outstanding season for Rondebosch U14C, marked by impressive wins and individual performances.

The U14D cricket team had an unforgettable year, as they contiued to go from strength to strength and were able to pick up great victories along the way. The boys managed to turn the North field into a fortress, taking advantage of the small boundaries and showing exceptional skills in the field.

A noticeable victory included a nail-biting encounter against SACS in difficult conditions, where the boys had to defend a low target. They had to show incredible fight and, through showing their quality in the field, were able to bowl SACS out in the 2nd last over. This massively impacted the team spirit, leading to a derby against Bishops. The derby was played with great passion and they were able to get the win comfortably, winning the game by 6 wickets.

We had close encounters in the second term and unfortunately fell on the wrong side. The boys managed to put those results behind them and finish the season with a noticeable victory away against Bishops.

It was an absolute privilege to be involved in this special group and we wish all the boys the best in the future. We will be monitoring their progress closely as every boy showed great potential throughout the season.
