Fresh off the plane (in my case), and off the tour bus (in his case) – the night in question took place at Le Trabendo concert venue in the north-east part of the city. As a complete throw-away line, the last time he played there, it was as the opening act for Grammy-winning American rock duo, Twenty One Pilots, in 2015. You know, casual.

   Two album launches, a few European tours, a spot on a Times Square billboard and a 5,000-strong show at London’s Eventim Apollo later, you could say the past seven years have been eventful for the man from Down South, who still calls Kommetjie home.

   Now that we’ve caught up on the past few years, let’s get back to ‘The Night’ itself. A few hundred of us in an intimate venue set in the Paris parklands.

   Give me some saccharine, half-hearted platitude about “music bringing people together” and I’d roll my eyes at you, bien sûr – which, brings me to the most frustrating thing about clichés: they often prove themselves to be true.

   But here I was – shoulder to shoulder with an audience of passionate expats who had waited years for this show (tears flowing,

flags flying), local Parisians (who were well versed in the English lyrics) and die-hard fans (naturally, we hugged and bonded

over tequila shots).

   We danced and sang, cried and cheered. While the physical impact of Covid-19 might have mostly left us, I hope the emotional

thrill – and accompanying gratitude – of being in the same space with hundreds and thousands of others never does. I, for one,

will never take a live show – or the ability to hop on a plane – for granted again.
